UK PensionWatch: Q1 2026

Review of Q1 2026

An overview of news, market movements and insights focused on defined benefit (DB) pension schemes.

Highlights

1

The funding surplus for the PPF 7800 Index universe of UK DB schemes rose over the first three months of the year.

The surplus rose from £259.7bn to £263.8bn, as liability valuations fell by more than asset valuations.

2

At 20-year maturities, gilt yields ended the quarter higher, with the nominal yield rising by significantly more than the inflation-linked yield.

The Bank of England kept the base rate unchanged, and markets shifted to price in rate hikes – the Iran conflict led to a deterioration in risk sentiment.

3

The Pension Schemes Bill continued to progress through Parliament.

Notable developments included the House of Lords voting against a clarification on trustees’ fiduciary duties.
